Regional Identity

Andrew Higson (1998) writes "Identity is generally understood to be the shared identity of naturalised inhabitants of a particular political geographic space this can be a particular nation or region"

Medhurt - "They are awful because they are not like us"

Every area has a particular stereotype which the inhabitants understand.

Colloquial dialect - how people speak in a certain place. e.g. cornwall "dreckly", London "geeeezaaa""apples and pears"

Semantic Field -  Texas - oil, guns, cowboys

Class

Karl Marx - media puts across the ideas that the people who are in charge must remain in charge

Marxist ideas  - The media is controlled by the ruling classes who use it to support their power. (social grades b-c)

These rulers are middle class white straight men.

Medhurts 1997 "They are awful because they are not like us" - Reaffirming the power of the white middle class straight men.

Richard Butsch (1992) working class males in the media are presented as @incompetent and ineffectual, often a buffoon, well-intentioned but dumb. In almost all working class series the male is flawed some more that others. (Homer Simpson & Marge Simpsons (bosses Homer about))

Gandal  2007 - Whenever you have a narrative with upper class, middle class and lower class, there is often social ruin. (Poor boy meets Rich girl). Target audiences are drawn inky sentimental rage to riches story.
